Access Pits

Entry, exit, connection, and restoration planning.

Warning Signs to Watch For

  • A sewer or water line needs full replacement but continuous surface excavation is highly disruptive.
  • The route is reasonably straight and can be accessed at suitable entry and exit points.
  • The existing pipe material and surrounding soil are compatible with bursting.
  • The line has repeated failures or widespread deterioration.
  • A larger or more durable replacement pipe is desired where conditions allow.

How the Service Process Works

1

Route and utility review

The existing line, depth, material, size, bends, connections, utilities, structures, and access pit locations are evaluated.

2

Design the pull

Replacement material, bursting head, pulling equipment, pit dimensions, connection details, and protection of adjacent systems are planned.

3

Burst and install

The old pipe is displaced while the new pipe is pulled into position under controlled force.

4

Connect, test, and restore

Connections are completed, flow or pressure is tested, inspections occur where required, and access pits are backfilled and restored per scope.

Practical Advice for Common Scenarios

1

Not excavation-free

Expect at least entry and exit pits and possibly additional access for connections, bends, obstructions, or unexpected conditions.

2

Utility proximity matters

Bursting expands through the surrounding soil. Nearby utilities and structures must be considered carefully.

3

Connections must be planned

Branch connections, cleanouts, transitions, and building connections can determine whether bursting is practical.

4

Compare route risks

Old repairs, concrete encasement, sharp bends, fittings, collapsed sections, and unknown utilities can affect feasibility.

Pipe Bursting FAQs

Is pipe bursting completely trenchless?

No. It typically requires access pits and may require additional excavation for connections, bends, obstructions, or repairs.

Can pipe bursting increase pipe size?

Upsizing may be possible in some conditions, but it depends on soil displacement, utilities, route, equipment, code, and system design.

Can every pipe material be burst?

No. Material, repairs, encasement, fittings, route, condition, and surrounding constraints affect feasibility.

What happens to the old pipe?

The bursting head fractures or displaces it into the surrounding soil while the new pipe follows the route.
