Plumbing, Drain & Sewer FAQs

Clear answers about leaks, drains, sewers, water heaters, filtration, repairs, service areas and project planning.

Emergency & Active Leak Questions

What should I do when water is actively leaking?

Shut off the nearest reliable fixture valve or the main water supply when it can be reached safely. Protect people from electrical hazards and saturated ceilings, move valuables, and call for service.

What should I do during a sewer backup?

Stop all water use, keep people and pets away from the affected area, avoid contact with sewage, and arrange drain service. Cleanup and extraction may be a separate scope.

Can I use another fixture while the main sewer is blocked?

No. Any water sent into the system can worsen the backup until the line is open.

Should I use a chemical drain cleaner?

Do not mix products. Chemicals can create heat, fumes, splash risk, damage some materials, and make professional service more hazardous.

Plumbing Repair Questions

How do I know whether a leak is from a water pipe or a drain?

A pressurized water leak may continue without fixture use. A drain leak often appears only while a fixture is used. Testing and isolation are still needed to confirm the source.

Why is my water pressure low?

Possible causes include a fixture restriction, partially closed valve, pressure regulator, filter, water heater, service line, leak, or undersized or corroded piping.

When is repiping better than another spot repair?

Repiping becomes more reasonable when leaks are widespread or recurring, piping is badly restricted or corroded, repairs are difficult to access, or the system no longer meets demand.

Does plumbing repair include drywall and flooring?

Only when finish restoration is specifically included. Plumbing access, drying, remediation, drywall, paint, tile, flooring, and cabinetry are often separate scopes.

Drain & Sewer Questions

How do I know whether the main sewer line is clogged?

Multiple affected fixtures, a backup at the lowest drain, or water rising when another fixture is used often points to the main sewer.

Why does my sewer keep backing up?

Recurring stoppages can result from roots, grease, wipes, scale, foreign objects, poor grade, offsets, breaks, collapse, or a line that was not fully cleaned.

Will a sewer camera find every problem?

No. A camera documents visible conditions in accessible, reasonably clear pipe. Sewage, water, debris, bends, scale, roots, or collapse can limit the view.

Is hydro jetting safe for every pipe?

No. Pipe material, defects, access, size, downstream conditions, pressure, and nozzle selection should be evaluated first.

What is the difference between lining and pipe bursting?

Lining creates a cured pipe inside a qualifying host pipe. Bursting replaces the old pipe by pulling a new pipe through its route. Each has different access and candidacy requirements.

Water Heater Questions

Should a leaking water heater be repaired or replaced?

A leaking connection or valve may be repairable. A tank leaking through its body or base generally requires replacement.

Why does my water heater make noise?

Sediment, scale, trapped steam, expansion, burner conditions, or moving components can create noise. The cause should be evaluated.

Does tankless mean instant hot water?

No. It heats on demand, but water still travels through the piping. Recirculation may reduce wait time when designed correctly.

How do I choose water-heater size?

Household demand, simultaneous fixtures, recovery, first-hour rating, flow, temperature rise, fuel, electrical capacity, and space all matter.

Water Filtration Questions

Do I need water testing before filtration?

Testing is recommended when a health-related contaminant, well-water concern, staining, odor, or specific reduction claim is involved.

Is a softener the same as a filter?

No. A softener primarily reduces hardness through ion exchange. Filtration targets particles, chlorine, taste, odor, or other constituents depending on the media.

Will filtration lower water pressure?

Any treatment stage can add resistance. Proper sizing, clean media, adequate pipe size, and realistic flow expectations help limit pressure loss.

How often should filters be changed?

Intervals depend on water quality, usage, capacity, pressure drop, equipment design, and manufacturer guidance.

Estimates, Service Areas & Project Planning

What should I provide when requesting service?

Provide the full address, contact information, symptoms, affected fixtures, photos or video, access conditions, prior work, and any urgent property-damage concern.

Do you serve my county?

Herman’s lists El Paso, Teller, Douglas, Pueblo, Elbert, and Fremont counties as its general service area. Confirm the exact address and service type with the office.

What can change an underground project price?

Depth, length, access, utilities, rock, groundwater, sewage, shoring, concrete, landscaping, connections, permits, haul-off, and restoration can affect scope.

Should I compare plumbing estimates by total price only?

No. Compare materials, access, permits, testing, cleanup, restoration, exclusions, unknown conditions, warranty, and whether the scope solves the documented problem.
